We made the Josephine for the skirt in the wardrobe that isn't a dress and isn't a trouser — the piece a woman reaches for when she wants a skirt and means it. Cut in banana fabric, one of the rarest and most beautiful sustainable textiles India makes. Structured enough to hold its line all day, honest enough to wear with anything from a fine white tank to a heavy winter knit.

The Fabric.
Banana fabric, woven in India from the pseudo-stems of the banana plant — a natural byproduct of banana farming that would otherwise be discarded. Softer than linen, drier than silk, with the slubbed hand of raw hemp and the drape of a fine cotton. One of the most sustainable fibres in production, and one of the least common. Substantial through the hip, soft against the skin. Deepens with wear.

The Colour.
Warm ivory through the body, hand tie-dyed at the hem in deep red-chocolate. The dye moves through the cloth in soft, uneven bleeds — no two skirts are identical. Reads like something considered, not costume. The chocolate is closer to old port than to red — enough brown to feel restrained, enough red to feel intentional. Pairs cleanly with ivory, cream, camel, deep navy, and black.

The Cut.
Fitted high waist that sits at the natural waistline. Clean through the hip. A-line falls from the hip to just below the knee — long enough to feel considered, short enough to move. Side pockets deep enough to actually use — the kind that hold a phone, a wallet, or your hands. Side zip closure, no visible seams at the front. Wear it with a tucked-in fine white tank, a fitted knit, a considered shirt half-tucked, or a cropped jacket.

Care.
Cold gentle machine wash, inside out. Line dry in shade. Iron on low heat. Wash the tie-dyed skirt separately for the first three washes — the hand-dyeing settles fully after that. Banana fabric handles like fine linen — it softens with every wash and holds its structure for years if you handle it well.
